How are the random surnames selected?

The generator filters an automatically screened local index, excludes saved names, avoids recently shown results when enough choices remain, and prevents duplicates in the same list. When no language or tradition is selected, it also balances the groups so one large category does not overwhelm the results.

Does the generator show surname meanings and origins?

It shows a broad language or naming-tradition category for every active record in the current index. Meanings are not displayed because those claims require separate, record-level sourcing. Treat the category as a navigation aid rather than proof of a person’s ethnicity, nationality, ancestry, or family history.

Is a last name the same as a surname?

Often, yes: both terms commonly describe a family name. “Last name” assumes the family name appears last, while “surname” works more broadly across naming traditions where the family name may appear first.
