What you may use the names for
The generated names and reviewed surname lists are offered as creative material: characters, stories, games, worldbuilding, and mock data. You may use them in your own creative projects. This does not transfer any right to claim a name as your family history, ethnicity, or ancestry.
What we do not promise
The Surname Index is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. Names are not guaranteed to be unique, free of real-world associations, or suitable for every setting. Meaning notes and common ranks are reviewed summaries from cited sources, not universal facts. Before publishing a name, check the cultural context and real-world associations for yourself.
Acceptable use
- Do not use the site to harass, defame, or mislead anyone.
- Do not scrape or republish the data in bulk without a written agreement.
- Do not present creative suggestions as genealogical or historical fact.
- Do not attempt to overload or disrupt the service.
