Last updated 2026-08-01. This site is designed to stay out of your way: the generators run in your browser, and almost nothing about you leaves it.
Overview
The Surname Index does not require accounts, does not sell data, and does not run advertising trackers. The random last name generator, the fantasy generator, and the surname lists all run locally in your browser.
What stays in your browser
When you save names to the saved drawer, they are kept in your browser's local storage on your device only. Clearing your browser data removes them. Nothing from the generator is uploaded to our servers.
Origin search queries
The origin search matches your input against a local surname index in your
browser. Query text is not stored locally and is not added to the URL by
default; ?q= appears only as a restorable inbound state.
Logs and hosting
Like any static site, the hosting provider may keep routine server logs (such as request timestamps and IP addresses) for security and operation. We do not combine these with profile information.
