About The Surname Index

The Surname Index is a working surname reference built for writers, players, and anyone naming characters, worlds, or sample data. It pairs a random last name generator with browsable lists of sourced family-name records.

What we build

The site currently publishes a random last name generator, a fantasy last name generator, and a surname origin search. It also publishes reviewed surname lists for Japanese, Russian, and Italian last names.

Every list page pairs the names with sourcing notes so you can see where a meaning, common rank, or regional note comes from before you use it in your work.

What the names are for

Surnames here are offered as creative material: characters, stories, games, worldbuilding, and mock data. A generated surname is a starting point, not a conclusion about ancestry, ethnicity, or family history. We label creative suggestions separately from reviewed record-level notes.

Where the data comes from

The homepage generator draws from a local index of sourced family-name records screened for this creative tool. Browse pages use separately reviewed profile data for meanings, readings, common ranks, and regional notes. Raw Wikidata exports and quality reports exist in the project as regeneration and audit residue, not as browser inputs.
